Door Latches

The focus has shifted from the door shells themselves to the latches and pins that will secure the door closed. I am using a combination of stock items as well as an after-market center latch and door rod ends. So it takes a little time to figure out how it all goes together and working in a smooth manner. It took some time, but was easier than I expected.

To get started, I made some holes in the latch pocket in the left door. This is where the latch gears will move forward and aft as the door handle is actuated. Then a custom hole was cut in the center of the door to accomodate the center latch. The value of this center latch is that it is connected to the main system so when the door is opened, the center latch is actuated. This is much safer than the stock vans where the center latch is operated independantly.

After much time getting all the internal pieces aligned and connected (most of the day), I remounted the door and found that the pins and center latch line up pretty good and only took a little tweaking. The door now closes with no inward pulling motion needed. Just rotate the handle and the door is closed and latched.

You can see the pins extend into the airplan structure at least 1/2″. I may eventually extended these slightly to have greater penetration. These tips will also have a magnet glued into place so that the sensor will be able to tell when the pins are properly aligned.
