Fuel Senders! Finally Installed!

Well the fuel senders finally arrived back today. It was a pleasant site to see the UPS man that I could hardly wait to cut open the box. Sure enough, they were there waiting. So I quickly mixed up a batch of fuel tank sealant, put it into a large 1/8″ site needle applicator and set to getting them installed.

The senders have a bent tube with a wire suspended inside of it. They work by measuring the capacitive difference of the tube as fuel is added to the tank and thusly touches the tube in different locations. This measurement equates to a known volume of fuel once calibrated. So I aligned the senders, screwed them into the mounting pattern (SAE 5) and then applied sealant around the exterior base of the sender and over the screw heads. Once this has had a chance to cure, I can pressurize the tanks and see if there are any leaks.

I also took the opportunity while I had some sealant mixed up to seal the Angle of Attack pieces inside the wing area that had previously been installed but waiting to get sealed. I had previously ordered another plastic base that I cut at an angle and placed over the drain hole. This looks like a mirror of the top base piece and will be connected to each other with some 3/4″ clear plastic pipe. This will ensure that any water that may be purge from the top seperator will no indescriminatly leak into the wing cavity. I have blue tape over the bottom piece as it cures as it has no other attachment (the top has 2 counter sunk screws).

The Ailerons progress some today as well. I had to cut 32 stiffners that will be attached inside the structure to provide rigidity to the skins of the Ailersons. These had to be cut from 8 long pieces, into the 32 individual pieces, shaped and then all sanded/smoothed and corners rounded. It got to be quite teadious after awhile. Then they were cleco’d to the skins and the holes final drilled. I got to prepping the skins after wards by smoothing/deburring and tomorrow they will be dimpled and the stiffners permanetly riveted together before the rest of the initial fitting proceeds.
