Flight Testing Continues

Over the last few days I’ve been working hard to wrap up the last of the flight testing. Several additional trips around the 100NM boundary has resulted in some great views of the terrain and has afforded me the chance to explore many areas I had never visited before.

With the help of Bruse Rose and the EAA105 chapter MicroVib II, I had my propeller checked for balance. The challenge was going to be that the new flywheels on the Lycoming engines as ordered by Vans do not include any holes to add weighs to. But we decided to measure the balance anyway. This way I would know if it would be worth machining the flywheel in the future to allow it to be balanced. Once we got the instrumentation hooked up, we ran the engine and RPMs up and found that the prop is nicely balance with a reading of .092 In/S. Anything under .1 is considered very well balanced, so it’s clear that while a VERY small amount of vibration could be reduced, it’s not worth the time and money given the difficulty in the process for this flywheel.

Flight hours are now up to 35.28, which is after a full day yesterday of 7.23 hours of flying in one day. That was a long day, but now I am so close to being able to get this plane out of Phase 1 testing and able to fly people and begin working on my instrument currency in the plane as well.
